Lime wash dates back to the Roman Empire. The Romans applied lime wash to plaster and brick exteriors as well as to the trunks of tropical trees. The Romans prized lime wash for its breathable, anti-fungal finish. To make lime wash, limestone is crushed, burned, and mixed with water to make a lime putty. The lime putty is then colored with natural pigments.
