Summer is nearly here! It’s time for barbecues, family gatherings, and other fun events. With that in mind, now is the perfect time to give your deck or porch a little attention. Regular maintenance goes a long way – it keeps those structures in great shape, and prevents costly repairs or replacement.

We have a few suggestions to help get your outdoor living spaces in shape for all those summer happenings:

Examine the Structure

Safety is a must for your family and guests! So it’s important to check for loose nails and boards, rotting wood, and surface and structural issues. Don’t forget to inspect the stairs, railing, balusters, and posts, too. Make the appropriate repairs, or hire a reputable contractor to do them for you. Don’t be tempted to skimp on repairs – the investment is worth it and will pay off in safety and long-term savings. You’ll find more helpful deck inspection and repair tips at the PaintSource Network and Family Handyman.

Clean the Surface

Check the surface for dirt, debris, stains, and mildew. Whether you decide to clean the deck by pressure washing or using good old-fashioned elbow grease, cleaning rejuvenates the surface. It also prepares the structure for new stain and sealer, should you wish to apply it. Wood or composite decking – we can help you choose what cleaning method is best. And just in case you didn’t know, we can help with this important step. We rent pressure-washing equipment and carry deck cleaning products, too.

Choose & Apply the Finish

Extend the life of your deck with finishes that beautify and help preserve the wood surface. Add a layer of protection with finishes that range from clear and semi solid to solid colors. To let the natural look of wood shine through, choose from among the many transparent or translucent options available. Or, if a hint of color is your thing, semi solids are good option. For those who prefer darker hues or an additional splash of personality, solid finishes are always good choices as well.

When choosing products for your wood deck, there are certain factors to consider. These include deck type, location (such as proximity to water), and covered or ground level decks. For more specifics on these considerations, check out the great tips on selecting and applying the right products at The PaintSource Network site.

We recommend using quality stains and finishes like Benjamin Moore’s Arborcoat, which offers superior UV shields, and Zar Exterior Finishes, which has excellent coverage and protection as well.  Other dependable favorites include the specially formulated weather defense system of Storm by California Paints, and One Time, which is an all in one preservative, protector, and stain. For older or damaged decks, UGL’s NuDeck, with its mildew resistant, non slip features is another good choice.

As for application, useful resources abound. Naturally, we’re happy to offer advice for applying the right products for your deck.
